C-32 Learn & Serve Grant (Revised)

Issue/Rationale
This Learn and Serve Grant will engage 4th grade students at Fleming IslandElementary School and 5th grade students at Clay Hill Elementary School in service learning that will apply academic curricula and Sunshine State Standards to improve academic performance, promote civic engagement and career exploration, and community needs.  The FIE students will all read "Little House in the Woods" to learn about colonial America and then work with kindergarten students to teach them about simple machines.  Fifth grade CHE students will research the history of Clay County and interview older community members to learn how to conduct an interview and record their stories.  They will then produce a booklet of outstanding citizens, places, and events for the community.   

Recommended Action
Approve as presented.

Financial Impact

Grant funds = $6000 for each school

Schools must match with cash or in-kind = $2000 each
